Presentation: Ritual Violence in El Caño. Analysis and Interpretation of the Articulated Human Remains and Marks, Found in the Simultaneous Multiple Burials of El Caño (Violencia Ritual en El Caño. Análisis e Interpretación de los Restos Humanos Articulados y Marcas, Hallados en los Entierros Múltiples Simultáneos de El Caño).

El Caño is a necropolis of the Gran Coclé tradition (700-1000 A.D.) located in the Dry Arc of Panama. Some of its tombs contain multiple simultaneous burials. The objective of this investigation is to determine the cause of death of the people buried in them. For this purpose, we performed an osteo-taphonomic analysis of the burials and analyzed the traumas present in the articulated human bones. The study revealed indicators of perimortem decapitation, dismemberment, skinning, removal of flesh, and quartering.

Commentary:  Carlos Mayo Presentation: CHRONOLOGY AND CERAMIC STYLES IN THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF EL CAÑO, PANAMA (CRONOLOGÍA Y ESTILOS CERÁMICOS EN EL YACIMIENTO ARQUEOLÓGICO EL CAÑO, PANAMÁ).

The materials analyzed in this presentation come from the excavations at the El Caño archaeological site, Panama. The analyses focused on ascribing the ceramics to the existing ceramic sequence in the "Gran Coclé" cultural region. Its aim was to validate the stylistic classifications proposed by other authors on the basis of data from stratigraphic relations and the absolute dates of C14. The result is a new proposal for the classification of Late Ceramic Period ceramics in the region that includes new typological varieties and a new absolute dating.

Presentation: Scenes Related to Death and Sacrifice in the Iconography of the Grave Goods of the Necropolis of El Caño, Panama (AD 750-1020) – (Escenas Relacionadas con la Muerte y el Sacrificio en la Iconografía de los Ajuares Funerarios de la Necrópolis de El Caño, Panamá (AD 750-1020)).

This work is part of broader research on the symbolism of the grave goods in the tombs of El Caño. Here we present the iconographic analysis of two Conte Style figures and three figurative pendants (two Conte Style and one International Style), each of which was included in the grave goods of the main individual of the excavated tombs. The motifs depicted in the pieces and their context of use allow the images to be interpreted as mono-scenes within a theme related to death and sacrifice, such as the intermediation of animals in the transfer of the soul of the deceased to the underworld, the sacrificial offering of infants, or self-sacrifice.

Construction process and postdepositional transformations (Las estructuras funerarias de El Caño (Coclé, Panamá) entre los siglos VIII y XI. Proceso constructivo y transformaciones postdeposicionales.).

Archaeological excavations carried out since 2008 at the El Caño site (Coclé, Panama) have documented a set of elite ritual burials with grave goods and offerings of notable wealth, dated between the eighth and eleventh centuries. These are multiple burials performed inside large pits deliberately excavated in the geological substratum of the lower terrace of the Rio Grande.

Commentary:  Jesus Herrerín.

We focus on Tomb 7 (unit UE301, Phase III), a multiple burial with a number of individuals between 28 and 41 in primary position, of different status, ages and sex, and accompanied with various grave goods; as well as a package of bones with a minimum number of 21 individuals. The objective of this work is the macroscopic study of the main stress markers. The study reveals high frequencies of Porotic Hyperostosis (PH) and Periostitis, medium/high frequencies of Cribra Orbitalia (CO) and Cribra Femoris (CF), as well as Dental Enamel Hypoplasia (DEH). This all points to an environmental origin in the emergence of these stress markers, especially in subadults, with harsh living conditions and periods of nutritional deficiencies during childhood.
