Multidimensional approach to the study of simultaneous multiple burials of El Caño. (Poster in HTML)

El Caño (700-1000 d.C.), is a necropolis of "Gran Coclé" located in the Bay of Parita, Panama. To date, we have excavated seven simultaneous multiple burials at this site. A common characteristic among them is that, in all cases observed, there is at least one individual associated with a very rich mortuary collection.

The research presented here aims to elucidate the cultural, ethnic and biological relationships between the people buried there, the processes that intervened during their deaths and funeral rituals, and the religious and symbolic importance of these tombs. These objectives focus on determining the nature and motivation of these burials, given their importance in understanding the political and social organization of the complex societies of the region.
