Commentary:  Expansion of the paper presented at the symposium.

This work forms part of a broader investigation into the symbolism of the funerary goods in the tombs of El Caño. Here we present the iconographic analysis of two Conte Style figures and three figurative pendants, two Conte Style and one International Style; each of which was included in the trousseau of the main individual of the excavated tombs. The motifs depicted in the pieces, and their context of use, allow the images to be interpreted as mono-scenes within a theme related to death and sacrifice, such as the intermediation of animals in the transfer of the soul of the deceased to the underworld; the sacrificial offering of infants; or self-sacrifice. Keywords: pre-Hispanic iconography, archaeology of Panama, grave goods, funerary rituals.
